Red Armor

I found two red bugs
fastened to the same green leaf.

The larger one kept eating.

She carved slow moons
through the edge of the leaf,
never pausing,

while the smaller one
dragged himself over her back,

all urgency,
all insistence.

The leaf swayed.

She didn't.

I've spent
more of my life than I'd like to admit

doing my taxes in my head
while waiting
for someone
to finish.
